Venezuela's Descent into Chaos

Venezuela, officially the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela, sits on the northern part of South America, right above Brazil. With a population of 31 million, Venezuela is also home to a high number of species (it is ranked number 7 in the world for biodiversity). For much of Venezuela's modern history, it has been riddled with colonization, dictatorship, and political conflict. In the 19th century, the nation was ruled by "caudillos", military strongmen, all the way until 1958, where it had numerous democratic governments. However, Venezuela was rocked by economic shocks in the 80's and 90's which led to the Caracazo riots in 1989 and the impeachment of Carlos Andrés Pérez , then president, in 1993 for embezzlement. Following the controversies, Hugo Chávez was voted in by the people in 1998. He began what is known as the Bolivarian Revolution, which started with the 1999 Constituent Assembly to rewrite Venezuela's constitution.

Chavez was a polarizing figure; many saw him as a savior and many saw him as
a ruthless dictator. He introduced socialism in the country and swayed away from  capitalism. Many of the Western nations, like the US and other European countries, obviously did not approve of the government. However, Venezuela had a jackpot of oil, and those nations were keen to step in. Venezuela's economy did improve, as Chavez sought to end poverty and to curb inflation. However, he did nationalize just about every economic sector so that the quality of services dramatically decreased. Private property was slowly being taken away, and he began to censure and control media. Crime has increased as a result, and Venezuela is now a dangerous nation.

Now let's move on to the current president, Nicolas Maduro He was elected following the death of Chavez in 2013, and was faced with taking the reins of a country that had many problems. However, since his presidency, Venezuela has taken a significant downward turn. He rose to become a dictator who hoarded all of the power and wealth. Now, Venezuela deals with hyperinflation, where goods are expensive. People have died from undernourishment and lack of government services. Following this recent controversial "election", he was reelected again, despite the millions of protesters. The electron is regarded internationally as a scam, and countries have already begun to enact sanctions against Venezuela. The results were allegedly either hacked or were fake. Maduro, of course, scoffs at them, claming his socialist government will succeed. He ordered the arrests of Leopoldo Lopez and Antonio Ledezma, two of the opposition leaders against Maduro. He also started the Constituent Assembly, allegedly initiated to bring peace as the government was falling apart after Chavez's departure. Now the country is in economic ruins as people are becoming divided. This may even turn into a civil war, judging by the deadly protests throughout the nation. Will socialist dictatorship really work in Venezuela? The world can only watch.
