Automobiles in China

We've seen the growth of China in the past few decades with less economical restrictions and the introduction of foreign companies that have fueled cities like Shanghai, Beijing, Tianjin, etc. A perfect example of this can be seen with cars. Thirty years ago in the 80's, barely anyone had cars. In the 70's it was even worse with people riding bikes around

Then again though, there was no drastic need for cars, as most people lived in either large cities where bikes would suffice, or in the countryside where bikes or large trucks would suffice. Private ownership of cars was not a concern for the government or for the people.

Now, China produces the most cars in the world with huge companies like SAIC, Shanghai GM, and now Tesla that may potentially build some plants in Shanghai. The catch though is that these companies are not fully-owned by the foreign corporations. Chinese companies or other state-owned businesses control about half of these companies, which are really more like mergers.

The growth really started in the 90's with 1 million cars produced in 1992. In 2000, it grew to 2 million. Then in 2009, it surged to almost 14 million. Amazing! To think that in 1984 only 5200 cars were produced.

While many Chinese people love to buy foreign cars like Fords, BMWs, Audis, and others, China is producing its own cars with success. Companies like BYD are producing many cars. However, some controversy has arising with BYD and claims that it copied the designs of other cars. Other companies are at fault too. I mean seriously... a Landwind? Or a Lifan?

But seriously though, it is interesting to see how the market will continue to grow within the next 10 years.
