The History of Shipping

wsj

$4 trillion of goods every eyar?

That's right.
Global trade is expanding. How did we get to this stage? I mean, think about everything you buy. Just about everything you buy is or has components that are made from materials shipped around the world. It's so amazing to see how the web of shipping has developed over time.

Obviously the first thing that comes to mind when you think of shipping is a harbor with big ships and containers of stuff. So what was it like before? Think about thousands of years ago when the first transcontinental trade routes were established in Africa and Asia./Middle East. 5000 years ago, the first trans-ocean routes were established in the Arabian Sea. Now obviously, they didn't have compasses, because those would come later in the 11th century in Song China (it was invented hundreds of years early in the Han Dynasty, but was not used for navigation then)
