BMW

Remember when Volkswagen got into that scandal over emissions cheating? That didn't turn out good and it didn't help that they were fined 25 billion dollars. Now another Germany car company is under fire for cheating. BMW (Bayerische Motoren Werke), or at least BMW North America, is being sued by American drivers for installing software that allows the vehicle to cheat on the emissions tests. The courts have found that on numerous diesel models, emissions were 27x the allowed amount.

Apparently, BMW claims that the software was installed by mistake and weren't even meant to cheat emissions. Hmm... yeah right. But anyway, they claim it affects only thousands of vehicles, which is certainly small compared to the 11 or something millions of Volkswagen vehicles with the cheating devices.

Oh yeah, it doesn't help that BMW, along with Volkswagen and Daimler all funded tests on monkeys to show whether or not diesel exhausts were better than regular gas exhausts. That caused some fury also. If you want to try to win over market share for diesel models, then just be honest about it because this just makes everything so much worse.

And now, German authorities raided BMW headquarters in Germany, and are considering launching investigations on other German carmakers like Daimler. This really sucks for the car industry, and even more for the German car industry, because cars are Germany's largest export and once your big automakers have their reputations tarnished, it'll take a while to gain it back. Volkswagen is still in the narrows and launching new models won't help with its profits too much.
