Autonomous Cars

See the source imageEnough about North Korea. Let's talk about a growing trend among automakers these days: autonomous cars. Call them driver-less cars or whatever,  but the trend exists, and some are way ahead. Tesla already has its autonomous mode on its cars, although there have been accidents involving the system. GM has its cars, and even Uber stepped in into places like California, although they did slow down their testing. And now, Daimler (parent company of Mercedes-Benz), is joining the game and going to launch its new program.

This is a growing trend where even the UK hopes to have driverless cars out on the road by 2021. More and more companies are jumping on the game and there have been lots of cooperation between different companies.

Let's take a step back though. Is this a "need" or a "want" because with the millions being poured into research, that could all be redirected back to designing more efficient vehicles that run on better fuel sources. They predicted millions of self-driving cars will be on the road by 2020 (Business Insider), but it seems we can't even meet production goals for electric cars (ahem, Tesla).

And here's the thing, even millenials are afraid of this kind of technology. Should we take a step back and wonder if we are going way too fast to the point where we trust a computer to drive for us and protect our safety as well as that of others?
