'Great Deal of Progress'

It seems that in the weeks since the Trump-Kim meeting in Singapore there has not been much else. Sure, causal verbal attacks have happened, but nothing has really unraveled what the summit brought us. So I guess according to Secretary of State Mike Pompeo, there is a 'great deal of progress'. On the other side, it seems to be the opposite.

North Korea claims that the "gangster-like" US is using bully tactics to gain a unilateral advantage. After Pompeo met with Kim Yong-Chol, Kim Jong Un's right-hand man, Pompeo said that they talked about a timeline for disarmament and destroying testing facilities. The US has promised a security guarantee to North Korea where they would stop military drills near them, while North Korea wants more. Now they are saying they want "something in return", saying how not conducting drills is not enough. Quite interesting indeed.

A problem that exists is the lack of South Korean cooperation. It seems that Trump is going off tangent by saying that the joint exercises were 'expensive and provocative'. This makes South Korea worried because they don't want to lose their primary source of protection.

While it may be normal for talks like these to have hesitance from various sides, the worst thing that could happen would be if both sides call quits and return to harassing each other.

  1. I think that is a great point. Diplomatic relations between nations should be mature and peace-oriented.
