Socialism in the 21st Century


Socialism has garnered bad raps for its inherent symbolism of death, destruction, countless dictators and cruel regimes, fake socialism or basically capitalism (‘Socialism with Chinese characteristics’), and also wealth and prosperity.

The idea of socialism itself is not necessary evil. I don’t think the founder Karl Marx purposely wanted to murder millions of people and stall societal progress. And yet, it has happened, and has led to communism and some of the worst things imaginable in the 20th century. So he idea of socialism is that everyone is equal and nobody is above anyone else. Karl Marx imagined a harmonious society where everyone works together and everything ends happily ever after. Well, no. Human nature doesn’t act this way, and so this was the opportunity for big government to step in. It is a perfect opportunity for an authoritative regime to come in and promise to “guide” citizens toward prosperity. That’s just pure imagination and speculation. And thus, the idea of everyone being equal led to a topple of the upper class as well as the intellectuals and so in many places technological advances were halted or at least twisted so that certainly topics were priority. Arts and humanities suffered a lot, and I mean look at China where thousands of years of history was destroyed in a span of a few years.

See the source imageBut now let’s look at Europe and specifically the Northern nations like Denmark, Sweden, and even France. Is socialism actually working? Karl Marx did not correctly predict what the welfare state would come to, but a partial realization has happened. These nations that have implemented socialism to a great extent and in the 21st century they seem to be working. Yes, they seem to be working, but only in these nations where population is relatively low, people are willing to pay almost half of their income to the government. 

In the 21st century, socialism just doesn't seem to be working as much. Sure, there are people in the US who  believe in it, but it simply can't survive completely. Especially when society is now focused on innovation and growth, having socialism throughout the world will just lead to a stagnation, no matter how "motivated" citizens are, because look at the US where people abuse the
