Iran is in hot water with the EU as they are cutting their oil supply from Iran. The US is mounting pressure on the EU and other allies to not buy any more Iranian oil. So far, Japan and France have severely cut their imports of Iranian oil.

On the other hand, the US is, of course, acting tougher on China as we all know. The  US  is pissed off at both Iran and China, but the one thing it never anticipated was making its enemies stronger. Now that both Iran and China are getting hit directly and indirectly by the US, they are growing more and more closer. China is Iran's largest buyer, and now they have pledged even more cooperation and a higher volume of trade. Way to rub it in the US's face. Way to threaten the "enemies", because now they're working even closer. Oof.

This obviously sucks for the US because its purpose has kind of failed and has brought two of its opponents even closer. It doesn't help that they are both nuclear powers.
