The minimum wage… Long a dispute for many Americans, the time has come for the minimum wage to increase. Federal minimum wage remains at $7.25 an hour, a very low number, especially in a country that has very well educated people. Despite widely being considered the only “superpower” in the world, the United States ranks 12th internationally in terms of minimum wage paid in dollars per hour.

The main reason minimum wage should increase is the fact that most people who are working for minimum wage jobs need it extensively. These include students trying to pay for college, people from disadvantaged families, and people who have a lot of mouths to support and are working multiple jobs. The simple fact of the matter is that advocating for an increase in minimum wage is the same as advocating for a younger voting age. Just as we need to allow the new generation to have a say in political issues, we also need to enable them to support themselves independently if they wish to do so and to support them. A young generation that is capable of supporting itself will be able to fight for others and eventually help their communities.

In conclusion, an increase to the minimum wage is absolutely necessary in order to empower the young generation. Also, it will help account for the economic imbalance in America. By making the bottom 90% have a bigger cut of the profits, we will be setting up for a more profitable America.
