Rocket Man and Pompeo

North Korea and the United States have always had a rocky relationship. That relationship has since improved since the much-anticipated and nearly cancelled summit a few months ago when Donald Trump met with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un. Since then, we have seen a better relationship between the two nations. We have seen a sharp contrast between the President's rhetoric in regarding North Korea. Previously referred to as "Rocket Man on a suicide mission", Kim Jong Un is now the object of "We fell in love". With that, both sides have been more open to dialogue and communication. Recently, U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo has met with Kim Jong Un in North Korea.

The meeting overall has produced positive results. This time, Pompeo has pushed for more talks about denuclearization and about a future meeting between Kim and Trump soon. The talks also entailed North Korea's agreement to let foreign inspectors check on their denuclearization process. Obviously this means that the U.S. made concessions. The U.S. has agreed to eliminate the threat of war by agreeing to declare a treaty to formally end the war.

However, one topic that was shockingly absent from the discussion was nuclear weapons. No side talked about removing nuclear warheads which means that the onset of nuclear warfare is not completely gone. Of course, that is not to say that the U.S. and North Korea will engage in warfare because right now they seem to be in good terms.

So what does this meeting mean? It means that while we are moving in a positive direction, both sides are willing to take steps only if the other side makes concessions. So we can see of this as more of a trade-off, or a quid pro quo than something on more amiable terms.
