Failed Diplomacy

Canada, a pretty nice place to be in, is getting hit pretty bad. At least, the Prime Minister Justin Trudeau is. But not so this time. Yeah. He messed up. In case you didn't know, Trudeau is getting grilled by Indians, Canadians, and others for his extravagant and downright cringy attire he wore on his trip to India. Why? What happened?

Well, there's really two parts to this little fiasco. Trudeau and his family apparently tried too hard to wear Indian clothing. I mean, they went full-out and took tons of pictures with his family, leaving others to wonder whether it really was just some publicity stunt. I understand that he wanted to show respect and "fit in" with others, but if normal Indians don't even wear that kind of stuff daily, then you should probably stop. I mean... when the people are greeting you in like business suits, and you're standing there with your long dress, it looks bad for you.

Now here's part two. Trudeau invited a Sikh-Canadian to meet with him and Prime Minister Modi. Yeah,  Sikh extremist who was convicted of a murder attempt on an Indian politician was invited to dine. In case you didn't know, India has a rather rocky problem with the Sikh's, a religious minority that is scrutinized and is oppressed. This issue has been going on for decades. Indian Army soldiers trespassed upon the Golden Temple in Amritsar, the holiest site for Sikhs in 1984. The Sikhs, in turn, assassinated India's leader, Indira Gandhi. Especially with the right-wing Hindu administration under Modi, things aren't exactly looking better. Now Sikhs want their own country, Khalistan. That's strike two.

Now let's look at Canada. Canada's legislature actually has over three dozen foreign-born members. However, the problem is that those people were selected based on demographic groups of the overall Canadian population. The parliament members don't exactly represent the districts they represent. What does this mean? Perhaps Canada is too caught up with trying to appease minorities that they forget to consider how to select them and to actually make progress?
