Fake Marriages

Sure, you've seen movies about fake marriages where they pretend to be in love just for a citizenship for something but have you seen it on a larger level? In Costa Rica, Chinese men are paying poor Costa Rican women to be their brides. Usually, they get paid little in American standards, about $175, but for them, it is a lot of money. Sounds ok right? But here's the thing.

The people who run these sham marriages are criminals involved in deep networks. They will sometimes even steal the identities of the Chinese workers, or never deliver divorce papers to the Costa Ricans. It's a widespread problem that is not unique just to Costa Rica, but to other countries as well.

So why? Usually, the Chinese people are looking for better lives and want to settle down in a new place. Other times, it's a gateway to places like the US.

Now, the government is taking action like not granting permanent residency to foreigners. They can apply for citizenship after the certificate has been registered by the Civil Registry. Even then, they only receive permits that span only a year and must be renewed. After 3 years, they can apply for permanent residency. So, is it worth it? Probably, but not so much as it used to be that's for sure.
